Here is a brief overview of the entire RBT process so you know what to expect as we move forward. Here is how the program is structured, with notes on each:
1) 40 Hour RBT Training Modules
- Completion of the 40-hour training practice exam is required
- Course fee is paid by LEAPS, hours spent on course completion are not paid as they are not work hours
- The certificate of completion is used as part of the RBT application process
- The practice exam is a similar, but less complicated version of the RBT Exam
- All notes, flashcards and videos provided within the 40-hour training modules cover the material tested on the RBT Exam
- When all of the training modules and accompanying quizzes are completed the course generates the overall certificate of completion. Once received you progress to Step 2.
2) Data Collection Training and In-Field Overlaps
- The hours listed in this section are paid at the Training rate.
- 1.5-hour Data Collection Training with Program Manager
- .5-hour Competency Assessment Review
- Scheduling will coordinate 3 in-field overlaps with currently in-field RBT`s
- The 3rd overlap will conclude with a Competency Assessment (about 30 minutes)
2) RBT Competency Assessment
- Upon completion of the 40-hour training, LEAPS will provide study material and access to the assessment tools
- The Competency Assessment covers items identified on the RBT Task List created by the Behavior Analysts Certification Board
- Prior to the assessment, you will be given access to a BCBA for assessment studying purposes
- Assessment is completed with roleplay elements as well as live-client demonstration
For professional credentialing and licensing all related fees for initial applications and testing, and subsequent renewals are the financial obligation of the applicant.
3) RBT Exam Application
- Upon completion of the above steps, LEAPS will forward you specific application instructions
- Application requires the creation of a BACB Gateway Account
- You will be asked to upload 3 documents. The 40 Hour Training certificate, RBT Competency Assessment and Degree/transcripts
- Pay $50 application fee
- Once submitted, your application will be processed in 7 to 21 days (typically two weeks)
- LEAPS will provide additional study material and access to a BCBA for studying purposes
4) RBT Exam
- You will receive an application approval notice as well as an RBT Exam invitation
- 1.5-hour test covering material in the 40-hour training modules
- Testing takes place at a Pearson Testing Center of your choice (Closest is Seattle)
- $50 test fee
- Once completed, you will get instant test results
5) Post Exam
- RBT Renewed annually
- Each renewal requires a Competency Assessment but no additional RBT Exam
- $35 renewal fee
6) Certified Behavior Technician Application
- CBT Application requires to be filled out and mailed to the Dept. of Health
- $95 Initial application fee
- CBT Renewed bi-annually
- $150 renewal fee
The Entirety of this process can take up to 60 day depending on how quickly you are able to complete the 40 Hour Training. This process is a required part of the position and must be completed in full. Although the New Hire Orientation, Data Collection training and Overlaps are all paid, you will not be able to bill hours in the field until this process is complete.
